In 2000, the newly formed Montpelier Foundation took over management of the historic home of James and Dolley Madison. The house was no longer recognizable as the home of the Madisons and most other structures were in poor condition. Within ten years, the foundation overcame hurdles to restore the house and grounds into a monument to the Father of the Constitution, and a monument to Montpelier's enslaved. Foundation co-founder William Lewis details the non-profit's ambitious preservation projects and remarkable achievements.
